Our Backyard Reno on TV!!     Last year we completed a backyard renovation that included the installation of a new pool made from a shipping container. (Isn’t the design rendering above created by Yardzen stunning?)  It was a wild summer of never-ending rain, mud and construction that was all captured for my work at This Old House as segments for one of their television shows Ask This Old House.   It was the opportunity of a lifetime to have a TV crew here following our project… Read more »

Storage Room turned Home Gym     After years of working out with my toddlers attached to my ankles, I finally decided to purchase some real exercise equipment and create a dedicated home gym. Unfortunately, the only space available was an unfinished storage room in our basement. Reversible Word Sign with Wreath Hook   This week on House One I’m sharing how I framed a 1×10 board with 1×2’s and added letters from the hobby store to create a reversible word sign. On one side, I spelled the word “Home” and on the other, the word “Noel”—making this perfect for year-round decor. And for easy decorating, I replaced the letter “O” on each side with a hook for a seasonal wreath. Check out the video below and click the… Read more »

How to Apply Wood Stain     NOOOOO!!! Have you ever spent hours working on a build only to ruin it with splotchy stain? When I first started woodworking, I sanded and used pre-stain, and did everything I thought I was supposed to, but always came up with an uneven finish.   In the years since, I’ve learned some tried and true methods for getting an even finish, even on pine. I just put them all into one video so you… Read more »
