When I started Build Basic we had just moved into a new home, and in true “can’t wait to get in over my head” fashion, I dove into a full kitchen remodel. When I decided to build our DIY Kitchen Island, I was shocked how few plans there were available for building an island from scratch. And while I was able to find a ton of really beautiful transformations of tables and reinventions of old/exiting islands or kitchen carts, I knew all I had was some lumber and two base cabinets to get started. Luckily, since joining this community, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know a ton of really talented woodworking and DIY bloggers. And so I thought today was a perfect day to backtrack a bit, and share with you their free building plans for a handful of stylish DIY build-from-scratch kitchen islands that I wish I knew about during my own renovation. Enjoy!

Hi Jenn, I want to make a kitchen table using kitchen cabinets as the base (for extra storage of items rarely used) and put a top on it. I want it square to seat 3 on each side, thus seating 12, the number in our family at Sunday lunches. I want to use the chairs I have now and have the table 30 inches tall with ample overhang to put the chairs around the table when not in use. Can you help me with size of cabinets I need or plans. Thank you
