Reader Project Storage Chest - Build Basic

Christopher Gardner from Jackson, MI took the plans for our Outdoor Storage Box to a whole new level when he transformed it into a toy chest for his son. Check out his genius idea for creating a simple handle in the front of the bench’s lift-top lid. Christopher writes;

“I added an edge along the bottom of the lid, and used a miter saw to cut the front supports at 45 degrees, creating the handle.”

Brilliant! Check out the photo below for a more detailed shot.

In addition to the supports added beneath the lid, Christopher also added a support pieces to the base of the bench. Once complete, the piece was so sturdy that he was able to, at about 200 lbs, stand both inside and on top of the bench! To finish off the build, he coated the pine in a clear coat of (affiliate Link) Minwax’s water-based Polycrylic.
